One day before the annual gathering of the international bartending community, ten finalists from ten countries met in Athens for the global final hosted by the renowned Greek brand at the \u201cKentron Athinon\u201d music venue. This year I had the pleasure and honor of joining the judging panel rather than simply observing, as I had in previous years.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"188\" data-end=\"639\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-24917\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/YP1_3266.jpg\" alt=\"METAXA 12\"  \/><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"641\" data-end=\"813\">The competition, now a fixture in the global cocktail-event calendar, presents a new theme each year. This time, the brief challenged contestants to create a warm cocktail!<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"815\" data-end=\"1116\">Participants were asked to mix herbs, spices, syrups, liqueurs, bitters and essential oils with<strong> METAXA 12 Stars,<\/strong> serving the final drink warm in any way they chose. Think drinks you would enjoy at an apr\u00e8s-ski gathering, beside a fireplace or on a cold winter night.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_24913\" style=\"width: 1650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24913\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-24913\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Metaxa_Comp_25_453.jpg\" alt=\"METAXA 12\"  \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-24913\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u0397 \u03c4\u03c1\u03b9\u03ac\u03b4\u03b1 \u03c4\u03c9\u03bd \u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u03b7\u03c4\u03ce\u03bd<\/p><\/div>\n<p data-start=\"1118\" data-end=\"1658\">It proved to be a demanding task, since warm cocktails are rare today. Neither guests nor bartenders often work with this style, which made the challenge even sharper. At the same time, it created an unexpected contrast with the classic identity of <strong>METAXA<\/strong>: its wines from Samos and Limnos, the Aegean sunlight featured across its bottles, and its long-standing presence in refreshing cocktails. This contrast ultimately brought energy to the theme and, having judged many competitions, I can say it led to some genuinely interesting drinks.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1660\" data-end=\"2075\">The ten finalists took the stage one by one, presenting their creations to the judges. Scoring covered storytelling and presentation skills, technical execution, flavor balance, aroma, complexity, finish, final appearance, temperature and overall innovation. I served on the judging panel alongside <strong>Arina Nikolskaya<\/strong> and <strong>Nils Wrage<\/strong>, with last year\u2019s winner, <strong>Maciej Knapik<\/strong>, observing every detail as technical judge.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1660\" data-end=\"2075\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-24919\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/YP1_3167.jpg\" alt=\"METAXA 12\"  \/><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2077\" data-end=\"2247\">After an engaging and enjoyable process, <strong>German Gochev<\/strong> claimed first place for Bulgaria. Estonia\u2019s <strong>Erik Tammeleht<\/strong> took second, and <strong>Sergey Tyukh<\/strong> of Slovakia came in third.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2249\" data-end=\"2562\">All ten finalists will travel in May 2026 to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metaxa.com\/pages\/metaxa-liknon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Liknon<\/a>, the <strong>METAXA<\/strong> home in Samos, set among the Muscat vineyards where the iconic Greek spirit began. The winner will receive a financial grant to support his bar, significant visibility as the brand\u2019s face for the coming year and a place on next year\u2019s judging panel.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2564\" data-end=\"2763\">The METAXA 12 Stars spirit shone through the competitors\u2019 creations, proving its versatility and strong appeal both in Greece and abroad, in countries that embrace it while honoring its Greek origin.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2765\" data-end=\"2781\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Until next year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The sixth edition of the METAXA 12 Competition reached its peak this November during the Athens Bar Show.
